According to the Michigan State Police Crime Data and Statistics report in 2010 (the most recent year with stats available) there were 101,175 domestic violence offenses reported, with 89 of them resulting in fatality. The most common victim being someone the offender was dating, with other common relations to the offender being their spouse, former boyfriend/girlfriend and their children. While not all offenses are reported, a few make headlines and shock entire communities.
The city of Grand Rapids was shaken awake on July 7th, 2011 when Rodrick Dantzler brought his abusive relationships with former girlfriends to the public eye. For years he had a long history of breaking and entering, trespassing, destruction of property, larceny, assault and domestic violence. In July, he choose to hunt down two ex-girlfriends, killing them, some of their family members and his own daughter, taking seven lives total.
Family members and people who were close to him described his temper as "explosive" and that he would act violently without thinking. This man should have been helped a long time ago. I would be interested to know what type of help his former girlfriends sought, if any. I'm sure they never dreamed that this would happen, but it just goes to show if you think you might need help or protection, you probably do. Don't take chances. Don't be afraid. If you or someone you know is living in fear, get help.

In another related note--we passed $300 in raising money for Safe Haven today! Thanks to Heather, one of the residents at work, for your donation! AMAZING!
Be the change. Make the difference.
